
In this room you can see the old machines which were used to work on cork right up to the finished product; the cork or bung itself. The cork extractor (su 'ogadore) would use a specially designed axe to cut a circular line, about 5 or 6 millimetres deep, into the bark of the tree. The cork which is first extracted is known as male or virgin cork and the operation is known as "demaschiatura". The cork which is subsequently extracted is known as female or reproduction cork.
