dining room
The dining room here is furnished with a sideboard, a chest for bread, a piattera, and a fogliu bench which could be opened out to give more space. The dining room was the central meeting place and people would gather around the fireplace (sa giminéa) which here is made out of sober granite stone. The long working day would end up around the hearth with tales and jokes being told while the women would work on typically female activities such as darning, sewing and spinning. Everyone kept quiet to listen attentively to the sas contos de foghìle, (the hearthside stories) from the most skilled and imaginative narrators. Often these story tellers would make their way round all the houses in the village and receive gifts in return for their tales. The term "foghìle" takes its name from the square of beaten earth or clay surrounded by bricks and stones which used to lie in the centre of the room without a chimney place.
